Many changes have taken place in the design and construction. Aluminum materials are used for longevity and ease of maintenance but probably the most significant change would be that many electromechanical (motor-driven) sirens are now equipped with a battery backup system. Sirens such as the Federal 2001 AC/DC units run on available, on-site AC power. These units have the capability to change over to battery backup through a transfer switch (similar to standby generators) in the event AC power is disconnected due to downed power lines or tripped/blown transformers. This is a significant improvement in the event of power being knocked out due to severe weather prior to an alert being issued.
Another significant improvement is the two-way status monitoring to assure each remote siren site is working properly. As is the case with Federal Signal’s two-way digital system, each individual siren site can be tested via a remote terminal unit. We also receive automatic notification in the event of an AC power failure, problem with DC backup system or cabinet intrusion. This helps assure you that all areas of your warning system will receive 24/7 coverage for any emergency notification.
Also, advanced electronic systems are now available to communicate voice messages to residents, workers or emergency personnel. In addition to better voice legibility, the warning system sirens are capable of utilizing pre-recorded digital voice chips for clarity and communication options in an emergency.
